Northern Ireland Weekly Deaths Remain Below Expected Levels
307 deaths were registered in Northern Ireland during the week ending 5 June 2026, according to provisional figures. This was 24 fewer than the 331 deaths estimated to be expected for that week, based on mortality rates and trends.
The total was up 23 from the previous week, when 284 deaths were recorded. For the year to 5 June, 8,240 deaths have been registered in Northern Ireland.
Of those registered in the latest week, 160 were male and 147 were female. The expected numbers were 169 and 162 respectively, meaning excess deaths were -9 for males and -15 for females.
Deaths mentioning influenza or pneumonia on the death certificate totalled 57 in the week, bringing the cumulative figure for 2026 to 1,497.
Two-thirds (67%) of all deaths registered this year have been among people aged 75 and over. By location, 45.3% occurred in hospital, 17.6% in care homes, and 37.2% at residential addresses, hospices or other places.
The number of deaths occurring in the week (rather than those registered) was 252. Registrations may have been affected by the Spring bank holiday closure of General Registration Offices, and seasonal patterns should be interpreted with caution.
