Provisional figures show 319 deaths were registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 7 August 2026. That was 19 more than the 300 registered the previous week. Expected deaths for that week were estimated at 322, leaving an excess of negative three.

Of the 319 deaths registered, 147 were male and 172 female. Expected figures were 164 male and 158 female, resulting in negative 17 excess male deaths and 14 excess female deaths.

For the calendar year to 7 August, there have been 10,946 deaths registered. Just over half were male (50.3 percent) and just under half female (49.7 percent). More than two-thirds (67.1 percent) were among people aged 75 and over.

By location, 4,966 deaths (45.4 percent) occurred in hospital, 1,945 (17.8 percent) in care homes, and 4,035 (36.9 percent) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Death certificates mentioning flu and/or pneumonia numbered 56 in the week ending 7 August, bringing the total for 2026 so far to 1,908.

Separately, the provisional number of deaths occurring in that week, including those registered up to 12 August 2026, was 247.
