Several Belfast schools dismissed pupils early on Wednesday following threats of further disorder after rioting erupted in the city the previous evening.

Seaview Primary School, Rathcoole Primary School, Cregagh Primary School, and Harmony Primary School all confirmed they would close early. The Royal Belfast Academical Institution (RBAI) informed parents that students would be sent home at 11.30am, except for those taking external examinations, which were to proceed as planned.

The moves came after social media posts circulated detailing plans for continued protests. The Education Authority had not yet issued guidance on school closures.

The principal of Seaview Primary stated in a social media message that the decision was taken to ensure the safety and well-being of pupils and staff. The school closed at 11am, with parents asked to collect children promptly.

RBAI cited circumstances beyond its control and said senior staff would remain to supervise any child unable to go home at 11.30am. External exams scheduled for the afternoon would continue unless changes were needed.

No further details on the nature of the threats were immediately available.
