More than 700 people attended the Africa Day 2026 event in Derry’s St. Columb’s Hall.

The free, family-friendly gathering was organised by the African Caribbean Community Network and took place as part of the annual worldwide observance of African unity and culture.

It received backing from Apex, Ark, Choice and Radius housing associations through the ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme, as well as from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Derry City and Strabane District Council, St Columb’s Hall Trust and the Greater Shantallow Area Partnership.

The event programme featured live music, traditional and contemporary dance performances, cultural showcases, interactive workshops, activities for children, and a wide selection of African cuisine.

Doreen Murugi, chief executive of the African Caribbean Community Network, described the day as a celebration of culture, identity and unity, and said such occasions help build understanding, strengthen relationships and recognise the diversity that enriches society.

Warren Kerr, a good relations officer with Apex, said the supporting housing associations were delighted to have been involved and that the event demonstrated how cultural celebration can bring communities together. He added that their shared housing work remains committed to inclusive environments where diversity is valued.

Andy Mullan, a good relations officer with the Housing Executive, called Africa Day a standout example of community events promoting positive relations and celebrating diversity, noting the strong engagement reflected the inclusive spirit of the ‘Housing for All’ programme.

The ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme is funded by the Department for Communities and the Housing Executive. It originates from the Northern Ireland Executive’s Together: Building a United Community strategy, which aims to improve community relations and progress toward a more united and shared society.
