Cultural Diversity Event Set for Derry's Cultúrlann on May 21
An evening of intercultural entertainment takes place at Cultúrlann on Great James Street in Derry on May 21 from 6pm to 9pm. The event, titled Integration Craic - Connecting Cultures, Creating Community, features performers from various countries.
The North West Migrants Forum's Welfare and Integration Officer Gaëlle Gormley organizes the gathering. Gormley states the event seeks to build relations between Northern Ireland's traditional communities and recent arrivals from overseas in the north west.
Gormley notes increased hostility toward migrants across Northern Ireland requires events that unite local people and minority communities. She indicates the aim includes countering negative stereotypes about refugees through peaceful coexistence and cultural connections.
Sole Purpose serves as a collaborative partner for the second year. Artistic Director Patricia Byrne says her group's Songs Without Borders will perform music from different countries.
Byrne adds last year's event succeeded and the group anticipates repeating the performance.
The family-friendly gathering offers free entry to all.
