A County Tyrone toddler with Stage 5 kidney disease is waiting for a suitable donor to be found so he can undergo a life-saving transplant.

Cooper Hurley, from Dunamanagh, has been on nightly dialysis and tube feeding since he was discharged from hospital as an infant. He was born with congenital posterior urethral valves, a condition diagnosed in the womb.

His mother Jessica Jackson said doctors initially gave little chance of survival and offered a termination, which she and the father refused. Cooper then spent his first 116 days in hospital undergoing intensive treatment.

Now aged two, Cooper requires a kidney transplant but must first reach a weight of 12 kilogrammes. He currently weighs 11.5 kg. Family members are being tested as potential donors, but no match has been identified so far.

The family has received ongoing support from the Children’s Kidney Fund NI, a charity that helps families of children with renal disease, transplant recipients and those on dialysis.

To thank the organisation, Ms Jackson will take part in a solo skydive in Garvagh this Sunday. Her fundraising page has already collected more than £2,000.

She described the planned jump as insignificant compared with what her son endures daily.
