Newcastle golfer Simon Thornton recorded one win and two tied-second finishes in a week of Irish PGA Open Series events. He now leads the Order of Merit after seven tournaments.

On Friday, Thornton won the Philip Walton Pro-Am at Malahide Golf Club with a six-under-par round. He made three birdies on the front nine and four on the back nine, with a bogey on the third hole. His three-shot victory came ahead of Cameron Raymond.

The following day, at the Redcastle Motors Clontarf Pro-Am, Thornton shot two under par and tied for second place with England’s Nicky Grant.

On Sunday at the Tylestyle Stackstown Pro-Am, Thornton began with three consecutive bogeys but recovered to tie Grant for second again. He finished on six under par, two shots behind winner Padraig Harrington, who birdied the final hole.

Thornton was also a joint winner of the Irish Life Druids Glen Pro-Am on 21 May.

Earlier this year, Thornton said he is building towards joining the Legends Tour after he turns 50 next year.
