Holywood Celebrates McIlroy's Consecutive Masters Victory
Rory McIlroy won the Masters for a second straight year on Sunday at Augusta National. The 36-year-old Holywood golfer secured the green jacket with a one-shot victory over Scottie Scheffler. He became the fourth player to win back-to-back titles in the tournament's history.
McIlroy dropped shots early in the final round but recovered with birdies to finish at 12-under-par. On the last hole, his drive went into trees and his approach into a bunker, but he two-putted to hold the lead.
At Holywood Golf Club, around 150 supporters filled the clubhouse to watch. Attendees included students from Sullivan Upper, McIlroy's former school. Oliver Keown, 18, said McIlroy impressed after a double bogey on the fourth hole. Hamish Johnston, 18, expressed confidence in the golfer. Leah James said she had no doubts about McIlroy.
Lady president Audrey Gibson said McIlroy maintained composure throughout. Club captain Kieran Diver noted international visitors, including from South Africa, America and Germany, watched the final there. He expects more tourists after the win.
Skinner's Bakery in Holywood produced hundreds of biscuits showing McIlroy in the green jacket. Locals bought them quickly.
First Minister Michelle O'Neill called McIlroy an inspiration for athletes. Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said he represents Northern Ireland. North Down MP Alex Easton praised his resolve. DUP MLA Stephen Dunne highlighted local pride in Holywood and North Down.
UUP leader Mr Burrows said McIlroy merits a knighthood for his achievements, including a career grand slam. Snooker champion Dennis Taylor called him an ambassador for Northern Ireland. Olympic gold medallist Lady Mary Peters congratulated him on the back-to-back wins.
