James Martin, an Oscar-winning actor with Down’s syndrome, formally opened the new home of Strides Day Opportunities Service in Conlig on Tuesday. The service, which supports young adults with additional needs, has moved to premises on Green Road.

Strides was established in August 2024 by Robert McGowan and Dan McCracken. It offers training in life skills such as cooking, cleaning and money management, alongside art and music sessions.

Participants also undertake work placements. Some have worked as classroom assistants in primary schools including Clandeboye, Bloomfield and Towerview, while others have been placed in hospitality venues.

Recreational activities include bushcraft, nature walks, horticulture at a local school and day trips. The aim is to help young adults lead more independent lives.

Dan McCracken, a director, spoke at the opening. He thanked families for their trust and said the atmosphere at Strides felt like a family, with young people pushing beyond their comfort zones.

Dan McKee, 21, from the Ards area, is among those on a school placement. He assists Primary 2 pupils and is due to help Primary 1 children from September. He said he enjoys supporting staff and finds the children good.

Mandy McCreight’s son Ben, aged 23, also attends. She said Ben looks forward to receiving the weekly schedule every Sunday. He works as a classroom assistant and has been asked to return next year.

Tamara Cupples-Menendez, 27, from Newtownards, participates in various activities and a work placement. Her mother, Laura Menendez, said Tamara values the sense of belonging and feeling productive.
