The body of a man was recovered on Tuesday after a fishing boat sank in Carlingford Lough.

The vessel went down near Greencastle Point in County Down with two people on board.

One man was rescued by a local boat and brought to Greenore Harbour in County Louth for medical care.

The Irish Coast Guard received a report from a member of the public at 12:30 BST.

The Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Belfast coordinated a response involving the Rescue 116 helicopter, Greenore Coast Guard, an RNLI lifeboat from Kilkeel, and coastguard rescue teams from Newcastle and Kilkeel. A Royal Navy helicopter also assisted.

The search operation involved emergency services from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

On Wednesday, the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious and that a post-mortem examination will take place.

Michael Muckian, chair of the Cooley Peninsula Community Alert group, said the incident was a tragedy that underscored the need for caution on or near water. He said those setting out for a leisure trip could not have expected such an outcome.
