Early vision support improves outcomes for Co Down child
A Ballygowan family has reported improvements in a child's mobility, schoolwork and motor skills after treatment at the Ulster Hospital Orthoptic Clinic.
The child, Eilis Kennedy, is non-verbal. Staff assessed his vision needs from an early age and supplied glasses suited to his prescription.
Orthoptists at the South Eastern Trust manage conditions including squints, lazy eye and binocular vision problems. They use specialist methods to test vision in young or non-verbal patients.
Treatment can include glasses, patching or exercises. Early identification of issues allows children to receive support that aids physical, social and communication development.
The clinic works with optometrists to confirm prescriptions and monitor progress. Staff review patients regularly to check that vision is developing as expected.
The family marked World Orthoptic Day on 1 June by highlighting the value of attending offered appointments and seeking early assessment.
