Parent Praises Newtownards Playgroup for Son's Developmental Gains
A playgroup in Newtownards run under the South Eastern Trust's Early Foundations Programme has helped a young boy with global developmental delay make significant strides in communication and social interaction.
Thomas Edgar's son Darragh joined Little Blossoms at St Mark's church hall just before Halloween. In October, Darragh could only mutter a few sounds, struggled to walk and climb, and lacked social skills. At a recent session, he greeted his father with 'See you later Daddy' and joined staff directly.
Edgar observed Darragh performing all actions to the children's rhyme Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. He noted that staff tailor efforts to each child's specific needs, accompanying families on their journey.
The programme partners with Surestart and Trust Learning Disability Nurses to support pre-school children with developmental delays in play and communication. Sessions offer parents strategies for early play, communication, and social interaction, especially for signs of learning difficulties or autism.
Family Support co-ordinator Julia Duffin for Surestart Ards stated that activities cover physical, creative, and social development, plus table-top tasks for concentration. Parents share similar experiences and celebrate milestones like using a spoon, kicking a ball, or sitting for snacks with peers.
