McGroggan's ice cream shop in Ballymena closes after 103 years
McGroggan's, a family-owned ice cream shop in Ballymena, closed on May 30 after 103 years in operation.
The business was founded in 1922 by Hugh and Annie McGroggan and remained under family ownership across four generations.
Owner Patricia McGroggan stated that declining town centre footfall, higher utility bills, wage costs, and increased prices for ingredients including milk and sugar made continued trading impossible.
She noted that online shopping had reduced visitor numbers in the area between the two main shopping centres.
The business had previously won awards for its homemade ice cream and raspberry sauce.
North Antrim MLA Jon Burrows described the closure as a loss to the town and said independent businesses face ongoing pressure from costs, rates, and competition.
A social media post from the owners thanked customers for their support over the decades.
