Thirty former soldiers serving sentences at Maghaberry and Magilligan prisons have produced forty hand-crafted clay army cap badges for an exhibition titled 'The Badge is Everything'.

The project ran over two years and was funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust through the Crafting Resilience initiative.

The Northern Ireland Prison Service delivered the work in partnership with Start360, RDV Service and the Prison Arts Foundation.

Each badge was formed from earthenware clay, kiln-fired and finished in old gold, bronze or silver glaze.

The finished pieces sit on a wooden A-frame structure that holds forty stylized soldier figures, with each figure carrying three words selected by the maker to reflect aspects of military service.

Maghaberry Prison Governor Tracy Megrath stated that a veterans' hub was established at the prison after staff identified growing numbers of ex-service personnel in custody.

Lucy Turner of the Prison Arts Foundation said the exhibition presents a collective view of military experience.

Tommie Linton of Start360 said the project encourages participants to consider mental health support available after release.
