Ex-soldiers in NI prisons create clay badges for new exhibition
Thirty former soldiers serving sentences in Maghaberry and Magilligan prisons have made 40 clay army cap badges for a new exhibition.
The exhibition, titled The Badge is Everything, consists of wooden A-frame structures. Each structure holds a single kiln-fired earthenware cap badge finished in gold, bronze or silver glaze.
The ex-servicemen selected three words for each structure to represent elements of their military experience.
The project was initiated after a senior officer at Maghaberry Prison, who had served in the British Army, observed a growing number of ex-armed forces prisoners who were isolating and reluctant to participate in activities.
The officer established a veterans' hub at the prison. SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, now works with the hub to support participants' wellbeing.
The Northern Ireland Prison Service partnered with Start360, RDV Service and the Prison Arts Foundation to deliver the project, which received funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.
Lucy Turner, artist in residence with the Prison Arts Foundation at both prisons, oversaw the creation of the works.
