Man remanded in custody over Downpatrick police car theft
A 27-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court on Monday 1 June.
Kieran Turley, of Vianstown Road in Downpatrick, faces charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle without insurance.
The charges relate to the theft of a blue Volkswagen Jetta that failed to stop for police in the Fountain Street area shortly after 4:45am on Sunday 31 May.
The vehicle was later found in Ballymote Walk. Officers pursued a man on foot towards Colmcille Road. A police car was then driven towards an officer, striking him and causing serious injuries.
A police officer discharged one round from his firearm during the incident. The Police Ombudsman is investigating.
Turley was released without charge in connection with attempted murder. A 36-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder and aggravated vehicle taking causing injury. A 27-year-old woman is also in custody on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.
The injured officer received treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance. His injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.
