Campaigners Push for Irish-Medium Secondary School in West Tyrone
Campaigners in West Tyrone presented plans for a new Irish-medium post-primary school at a gathering in Omagh. The event took place on Monday night at the Grange.
Paschal McCrumlish, chair of the campaign group, stated that sufficient pupil numbers exist from Irish-medium primary schools in Strabane and Omagh to sustain the school. He described the project as essential for local students.
The group formed in 2018 to advance the proposal. Gaelscoil na gCrann at Ballinamullin opened earlier this decade. Gaelscoil Uí Dhochartaigh operates in Strabane. An Irish language stream runs at St Colmcille’s in Carrickmore.
Pupils currently travel to St Joseph’s College in Donaghmore for post-primary Irish-medium education. McCrumlish noted that the Education Authority knows of the proposal.
The aspiration appears in the Fermanagh and Omagh Area Plan. The group considered the Strule Shared Education Campus but found no space available. The campus opens in 2028, and campaigners hope a site there could be repurposed.
