CAFRE to Host Beef Conference on Forage Systems in June 2026
The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) will hold a beef conference at its Greenmount Campus in Antrim on Wednesday 10 June 2026.
The event will focus on forage management in beef production. Sessions will examine methods to increase the proportion of forage in cattle diets and improve nutrient use efficiency.
CAFRE operates a beef and sheep centre on 120 hectares of grassland. The centre includes 100 stabiliser suckler cows and produces beef from suckler, hill and dairy-bred systems.
Staff have established white and red clover in swards. The work has reduced inorganic nitrogen applications while maintaining grass yields.
White clover can supply up to 200 kg of nitrogen per hectare each year once established. Red clover is used in silage production to raise protein content and reduce reliance on chemical nitrogen.
The conference will run from 9:30am to 5:00pm and include a farm visit after lunch. Evening farm visits will also take place from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.
Registration details are available on the CAFRE website.
