Residents in Belfast's Beechmount area have reported sightings of rats in multiple locations. Streets affected include Beechmount Grove, Beechmount Walk, Beechmount Crescent, Beechmount Avenue, Ancomri Street and Locan Street.

Sean Doherty of Beechmount Residents' Collective stated that over recent weeks residents saw rats in back gardens and under fences. He noted some rats were nearly the size of a small cat. Doherty added that rats have entered homes, with one resident reporting an animal consumed a pizza and its box left in a kitchen overnight.

Residents in Beechmount Grove believe rats originate from an old river between the Grove and Mica Drive. Rats have been seen climbing curtains in empty properties on Beechmount Crescent. Doherty said the group received these reports directly from locals.

Doherty advised residents to wash children's toys kept in gardens or alleyways. He recommended thorough hand washing after outdoor contact or handling rat droppings. He urged cleaning and disinfecting any indoor areas with droppings.

The group calls on residents to avoid leaving rubbish in back entries, alleyways or gardens. They also advise against leaving pet food outside to reduce rat attraction.

Beechmount Residents' Collective demands an urgent meeting with Belfast City Council. Doherty emphasised the need for engagement from local representatives.

A Belfast City Council spokesperson confirmed receipt of a request for assistance from a Beechmount community group on 7 May 2026. The council's Environmental Health Officers will address it. The council investigates all rodent complaints and urges residents to call the pest control service at 028 90 270 431 for appointments.
