Rodent Activity Rises Sharply in Northern Ireland Amid Weather Shifts
Rodent activity in properties across Northern Ireland increased by 26% over the past year, the largest rise recorded in the UK. Rentokil Pest Control tracked this spike alongside a national 10% year-on-year growth in confirmed cases. Other areas like Yorkshire at 20% and north-west England at 19% followed.
Experts attribute the trend to the UK's record hot summer in 2025, which extended rat breeding seasons and boosted populations. Milder conditions allowed greater reproduction rates. A wet start to 2026 has worsened the situation by flooding burrows and sewers.
Paul Blackhurst of Rentokil explained that rats swim effectively but avoid prolonged flooding. Displaced rodents then enter buildings seeking dry shelter. Northern regions show the strongest upticks so far.
Property owners face higher infestation risks after heavy rain. Rentokil recommends sealing entry points, proper waste management, and quick responses to signs of activity. Professional intervention helps manage severe cases.
Rodents pose public health threats through disease transmission, a longstanding concern amplified by climate patterns in Northern Ireland.
