Vandalism Targets Derelict Care Home in Newtownstewart Amid Redevelopment Delay
Police in Newtownstewart responded to reports of vandalism and anti-social behaviour at the former Bell Gray House care home on Dublin Street in recent weeks. Officers attended the site in early March but found it empty. A PSNI spokesperson stated that enquiries continue.
The building has stood vacant since its closure in 2016. Owners proposed converting it into private apartments shortly after, but no work has started a decade later.
West Tyrone DUP MLA Tom Buchanan addressed the incidents. He noted that the substantial vacant structure has drawn vandalism despite owners' efforts to secure it.
Buchanan urged those responsible to cease activity, citing concerns for the owner and community. He clarified that plans call for two- and three-bedroom family homes for locals in housing need, not social housing flats.
The proposals include a play area. Buchanan stated that redevelopment would benefit the area by enabling maintenance and occupancy. He said the owner awaits final approval from the Planning Service before starting work.
Buchanan called on the community to help prevent further damage in the meantime.
