Gerry Meehan, Ex-IRA Prisoner and Sinn Féin Activist, Dies in Derry
Gerry 'Meeks' Meehan, a former IRA prisoner and long-time Sinn Féin activist in Derry, died this week.
Martina Anderson, former Sinn Féin MLA and MEP, stated that Meehan's death caused shock across the city. She described him as kind and genuine, a friend to many and a comrade who contributed to the republican struggle. Anderson noted his quiet support for others and his role in community progress.
Colly Kelly, former Sinn Féin councillor for the Moor, called Meehan the quiet man who was always present. Kelly said Meehan drove republicans across Ireland for events including Sinn Féin ard fheiseanna and commemorations for hunger strikes and volunteers.
Kelly identified Meehan as a committed IRA volunteer, ex-prisoner of war, lifelong republican activist and dedicated family man.
Condolences went to Meehan's wife Mary T, his children and extended family. Anderson expressed thoughts with his family during their loss and highlighted comrades' mourning of his kindness, commitment and respectful treatment of others.
Kelly said he was fortunate to know Meehan among admired republican figures.
