PSNI Questions Man After Derry Mother-of-Two Dies in Summer Meadows Mews
Police launched a murder investigation in Derry after Amy Doherty, a mother of two in her 20s, died from injuries at a property in Summer Meadows Mews. Officers attended the scene at around 10.20am on Saturday. Doherty was taken to hospital, where she passed away later that day. A 30-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of murder.
Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin of the PSNI Major Investigation Team stated officers located the injured woman at the property. She said the force's thoughts are with Doherty's family and loved ones.
Derry City and Strabane Mayor Ruairí McHugh expressed shock at the death of the young mother. He extended condolences to her family and said the community stands with them in grief and support.
SDLP MP for Foyle Colum Eastwood said the city feels devastated with a sense of shock. He offered thoughts to Doherty's family and noted the community will provide support.
Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson stated there is widespread shock in the city. She sent thoughts to Doherty's loved ones and appealed for information to assist the PSNI.
SDLP MLA Mark Durkan called the incident heartbreaking. He expressed thoughts for those affected, especially Doherty's family and friends.
DUP councillor Chelsea Cooke said she was heartbroken by the loss. She stated communities should not tolerate women feeling unsafe.
