PSNI Faces Calls for Apology After Disorder at West Belfast Car Meet
Police in west Belfast responded to reports of dangerous driving on Stewartstown Road on Monday evening, 4 May. Officers arrived around 7.30pm after cars and scrambler bikes gathered in the area near Blacks Road, Bell Steele Road and Dairy Farm.
A crowd of people with covered faces threw bottles and masonry at police. Five police vehicles sustained damage. Two officers received injuries.
The gathering marked a car meet in memory of Shea McGreevy, who died in a jetski accident in Lough Neagh last Thursday.
Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker met PSNI Chief Inspector Ferguson on Tuesday. Baker stated police lacked preventative measures despite social media advertisements of the event over the weekend.
Baker noted cars and banners appeared on Monday afternoon. He contacted police for action including a visible presence, which did not occur until after 7pm.
Baker locked Dairy Farm gates to block the car park. He described a risk to life from the lawlessness and called for lessons to prevent repeats.
Baker addressed participants, stating their actions brought destruction and were not reflective of the local community. Vehicles arrived from Dublin and elsewhere.
Chief Inspector Ferguson appealed for information, CCTV, dash-cam or other footage. Contact police on 101 quoting reference 1141 04/05/26, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
