Police Officers Injured in West Belfast Car Meet Disorder
Police officers attended a vehicle gathering on Stewartstown Road in west Belfast from around 7.30pm on Monday 4 May. Cars and scrambler bikes assembled in the area near Blacks Road, Bell Steele Road and Dairy Farm. Some vehicles performed dangerous driving.
A group of people with covered faces threw masonry and projectiles at officers. Two officers received injuries but stayed on duty. Five police vehicles sustained damage. Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service personnel faced attack while responding to a fire and withdrew from the site.
Resources from across Belfast including a Tactical Support Group went to the scene. West Belfast District Commander Chief Inspector Kelly Gibson stated police recognise community worries and plan to work with representatives and residents to stop repeats.
Chief Inspector Gibson noted those taking part harm their own area and urged parents to talk to children about avoiding involvement. Police Air Support Unit recorded evidence for review by the Public Order Evidence Team. Investigations continue with arrests planned for those identified.
Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker criticised police for not acting earlier despite prior warnings of the planned event. Baker requested a meeting with police. Councillor Paul Doherty called the events unacceptable and dangerous to residents and road users.
The gathering marked the memory of Shea McGreevy who died on 30 April after a jetski incident in Lough Neagh.
