A group of modified cars gathered on Stewartstown Road in west Belfast on Monday evening during the May Day bank holiday. The event served as a tribute to a recent death in the car enthusiast community.

Drivers performed handbrake turns and other manoeuvres that blocked the road. Bikes and scooters also attended. Police arrived after the gathering started.

Open invitations appeared on social media over the weekend. PSNI had no prior checkpoints in place. Four access routes led to the area, including McKinstry roundabout, Michael Ferguson roundabout, Dunmurry and Colinglen Road.

Officers later sent riot squads and armoured vehicles to end the disorder. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher oversees PSNI amid limited resources.
