Vandals carried out a sectarian attack on the war memorial in Strabane, County Tyrone. The incident took place before April 29.

A letter to the editor questioned whether those responsible considered the sacrifices listed on the memorial. It noted that Northern Ireland would likely have faced occupation if Britain had been invaded by Nazi forces during World War Two.

The letter stated that all able-bodied men aged 18 to 75 across the UK would have been sent to labour camps in German industrial areas.

It pointed out that Northern Ireland's cooperation and bases saved tens of thousands of lives during the war.

General Eisenhower credited Northern Ireland's role, saying American forces could not have concentrated for the invasion of Europe without it.

Northern Ireland's Prime Minister Brooke lost two of his three sons in the war. During a Stormont conference on a dock strike, he received a telegram about his son Julian's death, phoned his wife, and returned to the meeting without informing colleagues.
