Derry City Council erected a plaque on April 15, 2006, to mark the 13 victims killed by Nazi bombs on Messines Park houses.

Two bombs fell near Buncrana Road during World War Two. One bomb caused minor damage away from the port. The other landed in front of houses on Messines Park, built for World War One veterans and named after the 1917 Battle of Messines where the 16th Irish Division and 36th Ulster Division fought together.

Thirteen people died and 33 suffered injuries, with 19 serious. Five houses were destroyed and others damaged badly. Some local houses still show scars from the event.

Victims included six from the Murray family at number 59: William, 50, Molly, 39, Ita, 13, Kathleen, 11, Philomena, 10, and Sheila, 10 months. Four from the Richmond family at number 61: John, 53, Winifred, 44, Owen, 18, and Bridget, 18 months.

James Collins, 60, and his daughter Ellen, 21, died at number 55. William McFarland, 44, died at number 57.

The bombing occurred the same evening Nazi bombs killed people in Belfast.
