PSNI Officer Injured by Motorbike in Belfast Amid Multiple Drink-Driving Arrests
A police officer suffered leg injuries in south Belfast on the evening of 1 May after a motorbike struck his vehicle and then him. The incident occurred at the Millfield and Castle Street junction where officers had stopped at traffic lights. The rider accelerated, causing the rear tyre to hit the officer's leg as he tried to detain the suspect. The officer received support but did not need hospital care.
Police arrested a 24-year-old man at the scene. He faces 10 charges, including dangerous driving and assault on police. He will appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court on 29 May.
Overnight into 2 May, police arrested six other road users for motoring offences linked to alcohol and drugs. A 25-year-old man faced charges of excess alcohol in breath and possession of a Class B controlled drug after detection in the Millfield area. He also appears in Belfast Magistrates' Court on 29 May.
A 26-year-old woman drew attention for erratic driving near Broadway roundabout. Police found her unsteady in the Ormeau Road area and arrested her on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs. She remains in custody.
In Newtownabbey, a 21-year-old man was arrested for driving while unfit after police saw him intoxicated at a drive-through restaurant. He is still in custody.
Police in Newtownards found a man slumped in a vehicle at a Court Street car park. They arrested him for being in charge while unfit through drink or drugs and bailed him for further inquiries.
Officers stopped a silver Mercedes with engine running at the Albert Bridge Road and The Mount junction in Belfast. The driver faced arrest for being in charge with excess alcohol in breath and remains in custody.
A 41-year-old man was charged with driving with excess alcohol in breath after a stop at Antrim Road and Atlantic Avenue junction. He will appear in Belfast Magistrates' Court on 29 May.
Inspector Green stated police actions removed impaired drivers from roads. He noted 29 road deaths in Northern Ireland this year and urged adherence to rules against drink or drug driving, speeding, carelessness, seatbelt neglect, and mobile phone use.
