Nerve Centre Project Catalogs Sam Hanna Bell Archive
The Nerve Centre's Now We're Talking project examined the archival collection of writer and broadcaster Sam Hanna Bell in January 2026. The Sam Hanna Bell Papers carry the PRONI reference D4643.
Bell produced radio features that recorded voices from across Northern Ireland. His debut feature 'Their Country’s Pride' covered urbanisation. Series such as 'It’s a Brave Step', 'Within Our Province', 'Country Window' and 'Fairy Faith' included stories, songs, poetry and folklore interviews.
He worked as a features producer for BBC Northern Ireland after starting as a temporary features writer. Bell retired from the BBC in 1969. He later served as literary editor of Ulster Tatler magazine.
Bell published four novels including 'December Bride' set in rural County Down. He also released two short story collections and two non-fiction books. His writing drew from time spent near Strangford Lough in County Down.
The Nerve Centre team catalogued papers related to Bell's literary works, broadcasting career, Ulster Tatler role and diaries. Current efforts focus on his correspondence with figures such as Louis MacNeice, W. R. Rodgers and Michael J. Murphy.
The Bell archive connects to the Michael J. Murphy collection, referenced as D4642 at PRONI. Project blogs provide updates on cataloguing and engagement activities.
