Bangor Photographer Publishes Book of 2008 Images from Harland and Wolff Drawing Offices
A photographer from Bangor has published a book containing images he took in 2008 inside Harland and Wolff's Drawing Offices in Belfast. Gerry Coe gained access to the building, which held original plans for ships including Titanic, Olympic, Britannic, and Canberra.
The Drawing Offices produced designs for vessels such as HMS Belfast, launched in 1938, and HMS Formidable, launched in 1939. Coe captured the interiors as they were left, with documents and plans undisturbed on desks and tables.
Coe documented marble staircases, wrought iron bannisters, a telephone exchange, and other preserved features. He noted that plans for Canberra sat openly in the space. The building now operates as Titanic Hotel adjacent to Titanic Museum in Titanic Quarter.
Coe took the photographs with a friend who arranged entry. He researched file numbers to identify associated ships. His grandfather worked at the shipyard as a stager building scaffolding around vessels.
The book costs £15. Copies can be obtained by emailing gerrycoe@me.com or calling 07846 871704. Coe expressed interest in displaying the work at Titanic Hotel and Titanic Museum.
