Titanic Belfast Displays Survivor Lifejacket in Women-Focused Exhibition
Titanic Belfast is showing a lifejacket worn by Titanic survivor Laura Mabel Francatelli. The item is on loan from Wiltshire auction house Henry Aldridge and Sons. It remains on display until Sunday, April 5, then heads to auction on April 18.
Francatelli, a first-class passenger and secretary to fashion designer Lady Lucy Duff Gordon, survived the RMS Titanic sinking in a lifeboat with 11 others. She traveled with Lady Lucy and Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon to Chicago for business.
The lifejacket carries signatures from Francatelli and survivors Charles Hendrickson, George Taylor, and James Horswill. It counts among few surviving original lifejackets linked to a specific wearer.
The artefact appears in the free exhibition 'Women of Titanic: Survival, Influence & Legacy' on Level 1 Apex at Titanic Belfast. The display covers stories of female passengers including Helen Churchill Candee, Marjorie Anne Newell, and Annie Clemmer Funk.
Eimear Kearney, Commercial Director of Titanic Belfast, stated the exhibition honors Titanic women and provides a personal link to Francatelli's survival story through the signed lifejacket.
Andrew Aldridge, Managing Director of Henry Aldridge and Sons, noted the display in Titanic's build city lets visitors see the artefact and learn its human story before auction.
