Antrim Senior Ladies Defeat Derry in Ulster Junior Championship Opener
Antrim senior ladies defeated Derry senior ladies 1-19 to 2-8 in the Ulster Junior LGFA Championship at Ballymaguigan Park on Saturday.
The match marked Antrim's first game in the round-robin group phase. Antrim recently gained promotion to Division Two of the LGFA County leagues.
Derry led by four points after ten minutes. Cliodhna Logan scored a goal for Antrim. Derry added a second goal after defensive errors by Antrim.
Emily Kearns blocked a goal attempt for Antrim. In the final ten minutes of the first half, Maria O'Neill and Aoibheann Monaghan scored points. Theresa Mellon added points. Laura Agnew scored a point before halftime, leaving Antrim ahead by one.
In the second half, captain Bronagh Devlin scored the first two points after runs. Devlin added another point from play and assisted scores by Caitlin Taggart and Aine Lynch. Devlin scored a fourth point. Hanna Donaghy scored after hitting both posts.
Manager Mickey Devlin said the heat and humidity affected Antrim's start. He noted issues in the first half but praised the team's response. Devlin credited training on forward play and turnovers for the 20 scores. He emphasized the players' effort and bench contributions. Antrim next plays London at home on Saturday.
