Fermanagh Musician Martin Donohoe Promotes Traditional Irish Music for Five Decades
Martin Donohoe has promoted Irish traditional music in Fermanagh for over 50 years. The Cavan-born accordion player works with Comhaltas branches there.
Donohoe began playing at age 14 in the early 1970s. He attended accordion classes taught by Pat McCabe in Butlersbridge. He met musicians including Frank Gavigan from Westmeath and Henry Quinn from Cavan town.
Comhaltas operated in Cavan under Paddy McEntee, P.J. Flood, Seamus Fay, Jo Baxter and Gerry Whelan. Donohoe started teaching in the early 1980s with Comhaltas branches and at home.
He plays the two-row button accordion in B/C tuning and owns 21 such instruments. Donohoe hosts a weekly radio show on Northern Sound and the NYAH Festival, now in its 26th year.
The festival receives support from the Arts Council and Cavan County Council. Donohoe performs at the Dún Uladh Cultural Heritage Centre in Omagh during summer and at Comhaltas branches in Fermanagh.
He takes part in cross-community music projects and school programmes. Donohoe prepares his fourth album for release at the 2026 All-Ireland Fleadh in Belfast. The album features Ulster musicians and regional repertoire.
