Fermanagh musician Laurence Nugent released a recording of the traditional tune 'The Gillaroo' this week.

The piece was composed by Maurice Lennon and takes its name from a trout species linked to Lough Melvin and local angling traditions.

Nugent described the recording as a relaxed and casual attempt, noting it was a bit ropey after learning the tune during the week.

He dedicated the post to anglers on Lough Erne during the height of the Mayfly season and referenced a friend known as the Lough Erne angler Ernie.

Born in Lack in 1970, Nugent grew up in a household where traditional music was played nightly, with his father Sean teaching lessons and the Pride of Erin Céilí Band holding practices.

Nugent began on tin whistle, later taught in Irvinestown and Tempo, and emigrated to the United States at age 19 where he performed at several major Irish festivals.

He won All-Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 1994 and 1995 and now divides his time between the United States and a home near Dromore, performing locally in Enniskillen.
