Assembly Backs Motion to Curb Scrambler and E-Scooter Misuse
The Northern Ireland Assembly has approved an SDLP motion urging the Executive to grant police expanded authority to seize vehicles involved in anti-social behaviour. The measure targets scramblers and e-scooters.
SDLP West Belfast Councillor Paul Doherty welcomed the decision. He noted the Assembly's backing for action against misuse of these vehicles in communities.
The motion highlights community pilots that cut illegal scrambler activity. It calls for funding to extend these pilots across Northern Ireland.
Doherty stressed the urgency to prevent serious injuries or fatalities. He referenced vehicle-related deaths in West Belfast and other areas.
Police face restrictions in seizing e-scooters and scramblers, Doherty said. Even after seizure for posing risks, owners can reclaim them quickly and resume use.
Doherty has collaborated with Belfast City Council, police, and community groups. They promote designated sites for safe scrambler use to cut risks and anti-social incidents.
The pilot programme achieved major reductions in illegal scrambler operations. It keeps vehicles off green spaces, footpaths, and walkways. It also prevents criminal records for young people.
Doherty affirmed the SDLP's push for Executive action. He called it essential to protect pedestrians and youth by clearing public areas of hazards.
