Fermanagh and Tyrone Pupils Take Top Awards in UFU Food Competition
Pupils from Gortin Primary School in Tyrone and schools in Fermanagh secured top awards in the 2026 'Grow it, know it, eat it!' competition organised by the Ulster Farmers’ Union, Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend, and Asda.
The competition received more than 4,000 entries from playgroups, nurseries, pre-schools, primary schools, and special schools across Northern Ireland.
UFU deputy president John McLenaghan congratulated winners and participants on their effort and creativity in the entries.
McLenaghan stated the competition helps pupils understand farmers' role in food production and farming's contribution to Northern Ireland's landscape and economy.
He said it prompts teachers and parents to back local produce and examine product labels, as many children lack knowledge of food origins.
Joe McDonald, head of corporate affairs at Asda NI, noted the high standard of entries and the competition's continued development.
Katelyn Baxter from Gortin Primary School won the Jennifer Hawkes perpetual trophy, introduced last year to recognise Jennifer Hawkes's service on the UFU Rural Affairs committee.
McLenaghan encouraged schools to visit local farms on the free schools' day to see farm operations.
