Northern Ireland Actor Finnian Garbutt Dies Aged 28 After Cancer Diagnosis
Finnian Garbutt, a Northern Ireland actor from Bangor, died aged 28 after a sudden decline in his skin cancer condition. He passed peacefully at home on Thursday, surrounded by family.
Garbutt played police constable Ryan Power in the last three series of the BBC Northern Ireland police drama Hope Street, filmed in Donaghadee, County Down. The show is set in the fictional coastal town of Port Devine.
Diagnosed with malignant melanoma four years ago at age 25, Garbutt had shared details of his diagnosis publicly. In March, he stated scans showed rapid cancer progression and that he was entering the last stages of life. He mentioned experiencing pain in his back and hip in the prior month.
His family announced his death on social media Friday. They noted he passed as he wished, with family present, and thanked supporters and GoFundMe donors for easing his final days.
Garbutt married his partner Louise last year. They have a one-year-old daughter.
A GoFundMe page set up by his family raised over £90,000 to support his wife and daughter with household costs, mortgage, and the child's upbringing and education. His brother Luke confirmed the death on the page.
Hope Street head of content commissioning Eddie Doyle stated Garbutt contributed significantly to his character's appeal over three series. Production company Long Story TV called him a much-loved cast member who brought fun to the set.
