SERC Apprentices Complete Sight Loss Assistance Training
Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprentices at South Eastern Regional College participated in Sighted Guide Training at the Newtownards Campus. Guide Dogs NI delivered the session.
The training covered safe assistance methods for people with sight loss. Participants engaged in discussions, demonstrations, and exercises to learn guidance in various environments and clear communication.
Sam Lyttle, Deputy Head of School of the Built Environment at the college, stated the session developed communication and practical skills for apprentices' careers in homes, public buildings, and sites. He noted it promoted accessibility considerations like electrical layouts, clear pathways, and safe practices.
Lyttle added that understanding sight loss and guide assistance supports inclusive spaces and community impact.
Paula McLarnon, Sighted Guide Training Officer with Guide Dogs NI, said the training builds confidence and awareness. She indicated simple guiding and communication skills improve experiences for those affected by sight loss.
McLarnon described the apprentices as enthusiastic and engaged in learning to contribute positively.
