The Very Rev Dr Houston McKelvey, former Dean of St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast, died suddenly at the end of last week. A service of thanksgiving takes place at Agherton Parish Church in Portstewart on Wednesday at 1pm, followed by a private cremation.

Donations in lieu of flowers go to the Belfast Black Santa Sit-Out campaign. St George's Church in Belfast noted his passing last Thursday and extended thoughts to his wife Roberta and family.

Coleraine Yacht Club described McKelvey as a long-serving member who, with his wife Roberta, contributed to the cruising section. The couple owned and sailed vessels off the North Coast.

Super Cup NI called McKelvey a valued supporter whose encouragement impressed directors, management, and volunteers. He received an OBE in January 2010 for community services.

McKelvey served almost 30 years as Territorial Army chaplain with the Ulster and Scottish Gunners and became the first chaplain awarded the Queen's Volunteer Reserve Medal. He retired as Dean of Belfast on March 31, 2011, after nearly a decade in the role.

Ordained in 1967, McKelvey worked in suburban parishes and advised on education policy to the Church of Ireland General Synod Board. He sat on the Education Authority and school governor boards in deprived areas.

McKelvey served on the Police Authority for Northern Ireland and as county chaplain for scouts. He edited The Church of Ireland Gazette and worked as a broadcaster.
