The trial of Brandon Rainey, charged with the murder of Chloe Mitchell in Ballymena, has been postponed. The 29-year-old, formerly of James Street in the town and currently at HMP Maghaberry, denies killing the 21-year-old on 3 June 2023 and preventing the lawful burial of her remains. Mitchell's remains were found eight days after she went missing.

Rainey appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Monday for a pre-trial review. His defence team, led by Des Fahy KC, noted a mental health background in the case and requested medical reports. A psychologist is scheduled to examine Rainey on 21 April, with psychiatric reports to follow.

Madam Justice McBride ruled that a trial starting on 28 April was not viable. She balanced the need for a swift resolution for Mitchell's family and the public with Rainey's right to a fair trial. The case is exempt from the barristers' industrial dispute over legal aid fees.

Prosecution counsel David Russell KC raised concerns about the timescale and Rainey's engagement with experts. Fahy KC plans to update the court during the week of 27 April. The next review is set for 28 April.

Proceedings were previously delayed last month after Rainey changed legal representation. Two psychiatric experts have been approached for the case.
