Brandon Rainey Lacks New Solicitor in Chloe Mitchell Murder Case
Brandon Rainey, charged with the murder of Chloe Mitchell in Ballymena, informed Belfast Crown Court on Monday that he has not secured a new solicitor. His previous legal team withdrew last week due to being professionally compromised.
Rainey, 29, remains on remand in Maghaberry. He faces charges of murdering 21-year-old Mitchell and attempting to prevent the lawful burial of her body. The alleged murder occurred in Ballymena between 2 and 5 June 2023.
Mitchell disappeared from Ballymena in early June 2023. Her remains were discovered eight days later following extensive searches.
During the review hearing before Madam Justice McBride, Rainey stated that one legal firm declined the case and a solicitor in Lurgan lacked sufficient time. He expressed a desire for representation but noted difficulties contacting firms from remand.
The judge welcomed Rainey's intent to obtain counsel. Senior prosecution counsel David Russell KC noted Rainey's entitlement to a reasonable opportunity.
The trial, originally set for 9 March, is now scheduled for 13 April. The court adjourned the matter until Friday to allow time for securing new representation, either by Rainey or family members.
