Belfast Crown Court learned of difficulties in obtaining a psychiatrist to assess Brandon Rainey, accused of murdering 21-year-old Chloe Mitchell in Ballymena in 2023.

Mitchell disappeared from Ballymena in early June 2023. Her remains were discovered about a week later following extensive searches.

Rainey, 29, formerly of James Street in Ballymena, denies charges of murder between 2 and 5 June 2023 and preventing the lawful burial of her remains. He appeared by videolink from HMP Maghaberry.

Defence barrister Des Fahy KC reported that a psychologist completed an assessment, with a report due by 26 May. No psychiatrist has agreed to take the case, due to the volume of case papers and professionals' other commitments.

Madam Justice McBride noted the court's desire for expedition given prior delays. She acknowledged broader issues in securing experts for courts in Northern Ireland and elsewhere.

The judge accepted the reasons for the delay and stressed the need for finality in the matter.

The case returns to court on 29 May.
