Sanctuary Runners Launches First Northern Ireland Group in Dungannon
Sanctuary Runners has started its first group in Northern Ireland in Dungannon, Tyrone. The award-winning movement connects long-term residents with refugees and migrants through lunchtime walks, jogs and runs. Participants receive a free running top with the organisation's principles of solidarity, friendship and respect.
The group operates in Dungannon, a culturally diverse town. It encourages members to take part in Dungannon Parkrun on Saturdays. The initiative forms part of the Unity in Diversity project run by First Steps Women’s Centre.
Mid Ulster District Council and PEACEPLUS, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, back the project. The project works to build intercultural understanding and community cohesion in Mid Ulster.
Anna Pringle, chief executive of Sanctuary Runners, attended the launch. She stated that Dungannon suits the new group due to its enthusiastic local team. She noted that running and walking together builds community connections.
Rosie McCreanor, project manager at First Steps Women’s Centre, said the group matches the Unity in Diversity project aims. She explained that it creates ways for people to meet, build trust and belong in Mid Ulster. She called sport a tool for uniting communities.
