Walking for All Programme Launches in Dungannon with €7.5 Million Funding
A new programme called Walking for All launched on 27 February 2026 at The Junction in Dungannon. Mid Ulster District Council supported the event. The initiative receives €7.5 million from the Special EU Programmes Body under the PEACEPLUS programme. Outscape leads the effort, which aims to involve over 14,000 people in rural Northern Ireland and border counties through guided walks.
The walks occur in local community areas and suit adults of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Organisers plan short, regular sessions to promote health, reduce inactivity, and combat social isolation. Sixteen officers coordinate the programme, training walk leaders to form nearly 600 groups over three years.
Outscape partners with 15 organisations, including eight local authorities and six sports partnerships. The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust joins as a partner, while Sport Ireland, Mountaineering Ireland, and the Public Health Agency serve as associates. In Mid Ulster, Matthew McNicholl acts as the Walking for All Officer.
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir noted his department's funding contribution alongside partners, highlighting benefits for rural community bonds and countryside access. Minister Dara Calleary and Minister Jerry Buttimer from the Republic of Ireland expressed support for long-term community gains. SEUPB CEO Gina McIntyre emphasised opportunities for health and connection in areas lacking sports facilities.
Outscape's Gareth Moore described the focus on inclusive groups to boost activity and reduce loneliness. Mid Ulster Council Chair Frances Burton encouraged resident participation to enhance active lifestyles. Outscape Chair Dawson Stelfox underscored potential for sustained wellbeing improvements.
