Lurgan Man Sentenced for Assaults on Police and Hospital Disruption
Jonathan Barton, 38, from Ulster Street in Lurgan, pleaded guilty to multiple charges in Craigavon Magistrates Court via video link from Maghaberry Prison. The charges span incidents from last year.
Police responding to an emergency on Derryhirk Road in Aghagallon on August 15 encountered Barton lying in the road on North Street, blocking their vehicle with blue lights active. He delayed them for several minutes before becoming abusive and allowing passage. Later on North Street, he stood topless in the road, shouting and blocking traffic.
On September 14, officers attended a welfare concern at Lurgan train station where Barton, wearing a blue jacket and shorts, fled an alley on William Street. After a chase through North Street to Wellington Street, he resisted arrest, striking two officers, attempting to grab a baton and a firearm holster. At Craigavon Hospital for treatment, he shouted sexual remarks and sang about PSNI officer Stephen Carroll, killed in Craigavon in 2009. He also wrapped wires around his neck.
Barton admitted damaging a G4S ankle tag on April 19 by scratching it off. He breached seven community-based orders tied to prior convictions for assaults on police, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour. He also breached another order linked to a Class C drug conviction.
District Judge Michael Ranaghan identified assaults on police and hospital disorder as most serious. Barton received four months for the September assaults and disorder, four months consecutive for the seven breaches, four months concurrent for tag damage, one month concurrent for the drug breach, one month for obstructing traffic and four months concurrent for initial disorder. The total sentence is eight months plus a £25 offender levy.
