A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to three months in prison for carrying a knife into an off-licence in Lurgan.

Jonathan Barton, of Ulster Street, appeared via video link at Craigavon Magistrates Court from Maghaberry Prison.

Barton pleaded guilty to possessing a knife at The Stables Bar off-licence on 25 November 2024.

Police were in Taghnevan Close when they spoke to Barton about another matter. He told them he was going to buy alcohol and then entered the premises.

Staff later told police he had entered with a large kitchen knife. CCTV confirmed the account.

Barton handed the knife to staff behind the counter. His barrister said there was no suggestion he brandished it or attempted to rob anyone.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan imposed the three-month term to run alongside Barton's existing sentence. Barton is due for release on 10 July.
