Whitespots Line Greenway Links Bangor and Newtownards After Completion
Ards and North Down Borough Council completed the 5.4-kilometre Whitespots Line of the Comber Greenway. The shared-use path connects Newtownards and Bangor.
An official launch event took place on Tuesday 24 March 2026. Project partners, funders, contractors and community representatives attended. Pupils from West Winds Primary School used bikes on a section of the route during the event.
Deputy Mayor Councillor Vicky Moore stated the project advances sustainable travel, community wellbeing and borough connectivity. She noted it supports walking, wheeling and cycling while highlighting the natural environment.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins attended the launch. She recalled attending the sod-cutting event earlier as minister. Kimmins said her department provided £2.9 million in funding. She added that active travel infrastructure like greenways improves daily journeys to work, school or for leisure.
UK Government Local Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood said her department allocated £3.2 million through the Levelling Up Fund, with £2.3 million for this project. Greenwood noted the line makes travel between Newtownards and Bangor by foot, wheel or bike safer and more accessible.
Work has begun on the Scrabo Line section from Newtownards to Comber. This forms the initial phase of a route linking Bangor to Ards, Comber and the existing greenway to Belfast. Plans advance for a Bangor to Donaghadee connection.
