Infrastructure Minister Announces Multiple Road Resurfacing Projects Across Northern Ireland
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced several road resurfacing projects in Northern Ireland. The schemes target key routes in Derry, Newry, Belfast and Ringsend, with work set to begin in May 2026.
In Derry, a project covers a 320-metre section of Seymour Gardens from Sperrin Park junction to Kinsale Park junction. Teams will remove the existing surface and lay new asphalt. The work aims to improve road strength and driving conditions for locals and commuters. Completion is scheduled for 19 June 2026, subject to weather.
Kimmins described the Derry investment as delivering benefits for residents and road users. She noted her commitment to enhancing the road network.
Near Newry, a £450,000 scheme will resurface Greenbank Road Roundabout and adjacent side roads. Overnight closures from 7pm to 6am run from 18 May to 30 May 2026. Signed diversions will use multiple A and B roads including Warrenpoint Road and Newry Street.
Another Newry project resurfaces 2.1 kilometres of A2 Warrenpoint Road Dual Carriageway, Newry-bound, from near Old Warrenpoint Road junction to Greenbank Road Roundabout. Weekend closures apply, with a 50 mph speed limit and no overtaking. Completion is due by 25 May 2026.
In Belfast, a £350,000 scheme targets Stoney Road from Ulster Hospital's rear entrance to Stormont Estate entrance. A full closure operates from 18 May to 19 June 2026, with diversions via Upper Newtownards Road.
On B66 Craigmore Road in Ringsend, a £416,000 project covers 1250 metres west of J Bradley & Sons towards Limavady. Continuous closure runs from 5 May to 22 May 2026, with diversions via B186 Cashel Road and A37 roads.
The Department for Infrastructure plans to maintain local access where possible across all sites. Drivers face likely delays and must follow signs. Updates will follow any schedule changes due to weather.
