Cross-Border Greenway Projects Secure Shared Island Funding
Funding has been secured for four cross-border greenway projects linking Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Irish Government's €2 million Shared Island Greenways Development Fund will support the Lifford-Derry, Warrenpoint to Newcastle, Derry to Buncrana, and Sligo-Enniskillen initiatives during 2026 and 2027.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins welcomed the announcement. She said collaboration with Irish Government counterparts had identified funding to expand the cross-border greenway network and build on existing successes.
Minister Kimmins stated that cross-border greenways offer a way to enhance sustainable transport, tourism, and connectivity across the island. She added that the funding demonstrates a commitment to developing sustainable transport on a cross-border basis.
Her officials have been working with colleagues in the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland to develop a coherent network of cross-border greenways. This work has been guided by a recent cross-border greenway feasibility study, which identified potential links to existing active travel networks in both jurisdictions.
£40,000 has already been allocated to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for preliminary design work on the Warrenpoint to Newcastle greenway, including £20,000 from the Department for Infrastructure. This scheme will aim to build on the Carlingford Lough Greenway and extend the active travel network in County Down.
